This is a quality reproduction of Stanley’s #78 Rabbet and Fillister Plane. Use the plane with the fence and it becomes a moving fillister plane designed for cutting rabbets both with the grain and cross the grain. Use the plane without the fence and it becomes a regular rabbet plane designed for cleaning up rabbets. The plane incorporates the following key features:
Two seatings for the plane iron: one standard seating for cutting rabbets and one forward seating for bullnose work.
Fence for controlling the width of the cut. The cast iron fence attaches to the plane body by means of a 1/4″ thick steel rod that screws securely into the body of the plane. The width is regulated by sliding the fence along the rod. Tighten the wing nut once you have the desired width. The fence can handle a maximum width of 1 3/4″ and may be deployed on either side of the body. The fence is quite sturdy which combined with the precise machining guarantee it is absolutely parallel to the side of the plane.
Fence for controlling the depth of the cut. The fence aligns with and slides smoothly inside a machined groove in the plane body and may be securely locked at any depth up to 5/8″.
Cutting spur or knicker for scoring the fibers when cutting cross grain rabbets. Needs sharpening for best performance.
The body of the plane is made from fine grey cast iron that has been epoxy coated for lasting protection.The sides and sole of the plane are finely ground and machined to exacting requirements. The plane also features an adjustment lever for setting the iron depth of cut. The 1 1/2″ wide and 3/32″ thick cutting iron is made from high carbon steel hardened to Rc 61. A HSS cutting iron (Rc 65) is also available separately.

With a sole measuring 8 1/8″ x 1 1/2″ and an iron bedded at a 45 degree angle, this plane really excells at cutting rabbets and is a great choice for the woodworker who prefers a hand tool over a machine.
